Today the riders faced one of the most unpredictable legs of the Motorcycle TransAm yet. We left Durango, Colorado at a chilly 36 degrees and dropped from 8,400 feet to 4,000 feet on our way to Moab, Utah; 291 miles of grit.
This ride is not for the weak. I watched riders doing push-ups at gas stations just to get warm again before heading back out. As the sun climbed and the air finally warmed, a new challenge hit. Road construction had completely torn up a section of highway, leaving nothing but potholes and loose stone, like nothing I’d ever seen. Out here there is no detour, so the only way forward was through. Two miles of bouncing over rocks on century-old machines, it was unreal!
But the reward was worth every jolt. The red rocks appeared like magic, and soon we were surrounded by the breathtaking arches and glowing cliffs of Utah. Riders made a quick stop on the edge of Monument Valley to snap photos of that iconic landscape. Pure desert beauty.
After a long day of steep grades and rough roads, everyone rolled into Moab tired but smiling. A few bikes needed extra love after the punishment, but the teams are already wrenching and tuning to make sure they are back on the start line Tuesday morning.
Tomorrow we head for Legends Museum for a rest day. These riders continue to prove they are as tough as the terrain they conquer!
