Today was another great day of antique motorcycles! We covered 142 miles from Apex, NC to Statesville, NC, winding through some fun twisty country roads. The landscape started to shift a little, still gentle, but we began noticing a few more hills compared to our flat first day. Nothing too wild yet, just enough to keep things interesting!
The day went by so quickly that Patrick Murphy almost beat the lead staff van into the finish. His timing was so fast that we didn’t even have the inflatable arch set up when he rolled in!
Of course, no run is complete without a few challenges. We had two frame cracks out on the road and a condenser issue on Bill Page’s sidecar JD. But in true Bill fashion, he never quit. He and Amy found a way to keep that machine going and proudly finished the day with every single mile.
Our finish line was at Westside Twins in Statesville, and what a welcome we had! The American Legion Riders came out and treated us to an incredible meal, southern chili, hamburgers, hotdogs, the works. It was exactly what we needed after a day in the saddle.
And as luck would have it, with all of our catastrophic breakdowns, we couldn’t have landed at a better spot. Westside Twins let the Motorcycle TransAm completely take over their shop. Their lifts were full of our bikes, everything from cracked frames to routine maintenance, yet they made us feel right at home. Honestly, it felt like we’d known them forever with how accommodating and generous they were.
The community showed up too, not just to see the motorcycles but to watch the work being done right there in the shop. It turned into such a fun, supportive atmosphere, the kind of day that makes this run so special.
Now we rest up, because tomorrow morning we wake up and do it all over again!
