I just can’t seem to stay away from these epic antique motorcycle events! I have competed in five Cannonballs (plus three Cross Country Chases). I plan to ride my 1917 Henderson model G Eclipse, which earned perfect points in 2021.
I have ridden since 1960, but did not become interested in antique bikes until the mid 2000s, long after retirement from electrical engineering. In 2023, I was the second-oldest Cannonball rider and will be 84 for this event. Today I could do the run, and with luck, I will still be good to go next year. I have to exercise constantly to stay in shape. Eclipse weighs only a bit over 300 lbs, with a 3-speed transmission, a comfortable low seat, and easy starting.
For this event, I will have a windshield (no more neck pain!), turn signals, an alternator, and a proper muffler. My main problem in the 2021 Cannonball was overheating caused by low-compression cylinders (3.2:1) designed for the low-octane fuels available during WW1. I estimate I only had 6 – 8 horsepower, and I had to run as rich as possible, with extreme spark advance, getting only 30 MPG.
In the 2023 Cannonball, I had higher compression pistons and could operate the engine normally, but cylinder base bolt problems caused engine failure near the end. I think I have this sorted out, but I will have 2 summers to test Eclipse and myself.
