Day 14 inaugural motorcycle transam: McKenzie Pass to the Spruce Goose

Stage 14 of the Motorcycle TransAm was another long and grueling day. Even with only two stages left these riders pushed through 294 miles that included the spectacular McKenzie Pass in the Cascades. The route showed off just how beautiful and diverse Oregon can be. We rolled from the stark, otherworldly stretches of eastern Oregon into lush green forests and towering mountains all in a single day’s ride.

A few riders hit trouble along the way. Larry fought a stubborn cylinder and Bart dealt with fouled plugs, but both of them were already at work with their crews tonight. There is no doubt we will see them cross the finish line tomorrow.

The finish order felt familiar. The Wolfpack came in first, followed by Eric Bahl who is always steady in the fourth or fifth spot. Bob Jesernik arrived near the front as usual. Team Butts rolled in together, true to their “all for one, one for all” spirit, and Norm Berg at his steady pace. Danger Dan and Tyler Golletti came in within a few minutes of each other and then the Kansas/Texas squad supported one another as always, and the Italian team took their time to enjoy every sight the USA has to offer.

About ten miles from the museum the riders got a special treat. The route included a ferry crossing, giving everyone a chance to roll their century old machines onto the boat and go across the river. It was a fun and unexpected highlight that added even more character to the day.

Our ending destination was a true highlight. The Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in McMinnville opened its giant back doors so our century old motorcycles could be displayed right alongside historic aircraft. Riders pushed their bikes inside and spent the afternoon exploring the Spruce Goose, the Spirit of Saint Louis, the Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk, and space exhibits that stretched across the hangars. The staff even invited us into the cockpit of the Spruce Goose, where the talented Joe Petrali once served as a flight engineer on its single flight. Seeing the very seat he used was unforgettable.

We also had a wonderful surprise guest. Jeanette from Westside Twins in Statesville, NC, who hosted us early in the race, made the trip back to her hometown to see us again. What a treat it was to reconnect with her and share this stage of the journey. We were so honored that she came to cheer on the riders and celebrate with us one more time!

The museum staff welcomed us with open arms and made the day feel extra special. I can hardly believe tomorrow is the final stage. It is bittersweet to think this incredible adventure is almost over, but what a collection of memories we have made.
